The 17th Tynemouth Beach Volleyball Tournament 2009

Our 17th tournament and again, the weather didn't disappoint. Glorious sunshine shone on Tynemouth Longsands all day on Saturday for the 2-a-side Men's, Women's and 4-a-side Junior competition.

Women

There were 10 female teams entering, playing a mixture of abilities in the morning. The competition was then split into a top and plate competition in the afternoon. The plate competition was won by North Riding Eagles, with runners-up, Nunthorpe.

The top pool saw Grooving Allstars, a team consisting of Middlesbrough College National League players – Tor Swindells and Mandy McLean win, with runners-up Helen Sowden (Derby) and Michaela Lukesova, playing her first Tynemouth Tournament.

Men

The Men's competition consisted of 20 teams from all over the North and was eventually won by Middlesbrough College players – Dave Black and Damian Sosnowski. Runners-up were more Middlesbrough College players, Mosher and Chav – Simon Harsley and Andrew Yates.

The men's plate was won by a Polish combination – Monster Threads: Rafael and Serek, with runners-up, locals – Hebburn Help Us.

Juniors

The Juniors had a great day but was marred by the low number of entries. Results as follows:
Girls 4-a-side Winners: Eagles – Runners-up: Newburn
Boys 4-a-side Winners: Tynedale – Runners-up: Kavellos

The Juniors then had a go at playing 2-a-side for a bit of fun. Girls winners – Alice & Rachel, runners-up – Coral & Jo. Boys winners – Simon & Max, runners-up Richard & Nathan.

Sunday Mixes

Sunday again saw sunshine, not quite as strong as the previous day and therefore seeing less people burnt but possibly ideal playing conditions, and we welcomed 28 teams for the mixed 4-a-side competition. After playing mixed pools in the morning, we then split into 3 Divisions based on the results.

Division 3 winners were – Owt U Like, a team from NESLC, with runners-up – Sexy Laskie, from Tynedale VC.

Division 2 winners were Northumberland team – Concordia D, Gary, Becky, Alex and Graham, beating another Concordia team in the final.

Division 1 winners were Middlesbrough College team; Anything but the Spicegirls – Will and Nic Milburn, Kieran Sowden and John Chapman. Runners-up were; 3's a Crowd, a team from Cumbria.

Our fun, mixed 2-a-side knockout competition, held over the lunch period was eventually won by Cumbrian pair, Craig and Liam Drinkald with runners-up, Middlesbrough College duo, Stu Jeanes and Mandy McLean.

The weekend was voted a tremendous success, helped by the weather but also by the friendly atmosphere, with everyone involved looking forward to next year.
